Choosing the wrong lithium battery pack supplier creates expensive risks: field failures, safety hazards, delayed product launches, warranty claims and product recalls. Many OEM buyers focus only on price and delivery lead time, overlooking the core technical capabilities that separate reliable battery partners from simple assembly factories.
A large number of battery vendors are just pack assemblers. They purchase off-the-shelf BMS boards from third parties and perform only cell welding and casing assembly. These factories have no BMS hardware or firmware R&D team. When you need custom logic, protocol adaptation or performance tuning, they cannot modify the core system — leaving your project stuck with rigid, generic battery solutions.
Before signing a manufacturing contract, OEM engineering and procurement teams should run through this supplier verification checklist.

1. Does the supplier develop BMS in-house?
This is your first and most important check. Confirm whether the supplier owns BMS schematic design, hardware development and firmware programming capability, or merely buys ready-made BMS from external vendors. Suppliers with self-developed BMS can adjust protection thresholds, SOC algorithms and communication logic to match your product requirements. Pure assembly factories cannot fix underlying BMS defects, troubleshoot abnormal protection events, or adapt the control system to your application.
2. What cell grade and traceability do they provide?
Not all lithium cells are equal. Confirm the exact cell grade, capacity tolerance, internal-resistance consistency and batch traceability. Low-cost assemblers often use Grade B or recycled cells to cut cost, which leads to fast capacity decay, growing cell imbalance and shortened service life after a few hundred cycles. Request cell datasheets, incoming-inspection records and batch test reports to validate cell quality before mass production.
3. What testing is performed on every battery pack?
Ask for the full test suite applied during prototype and mass production. A qualified supplier carries out comprehensive testing: cell matching, OCV and internal-resistance inspection, charge-discharge cycling, overcharge / over-discharge / short-circuit protection testing, thermal cycling, vibration and aging tests. Suppliers with limited capability perform only simple voltage checks — hidden defects then pass to end customers and trigger safety risks in the field.
4. Can they support the certifications your market requires?
Confirm whether the supplier can prepare test reports and certificates matching your target market: UN38.3, IEC 62133, UL, CE and CB. Critically, the certification must cover your exact battery configuration rather than a generic model. Many simple assembly factories cannot assist with certification applications or provide supporting technical files, slowing your market access and blocking global shipments.
5. Can they do BMS firmware secondary development?
For drones, robots, mobile equipment and industrial power systems, off-the-shelf firmware rarely fits your integration needs. Check whether the supplier can customize firmware, adjust state-machine logic, modify data reporting and support multi-protocol communication including DroneCAN, CAN bus, RS485 and Bluetooth. If a supplier locks BMS firmware and refuses modification, you lose flexibility for future product iteration and system optimization.
