What is LiFePO4 Battery?

Lithium iron phosphate battery, commonly abbreviated as LFP battery, belongs to the family of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. It adopts lithium iron phosphate as its cathode material, while the anode consists of graphite carbon material matched with metallic current collector.


Compared with traditional lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) batteries, LiFePO4 cells possess higher specific capacity. Nevertheless, its overall energy density is relatively lower owing to its relatively low working voltage. Poor intrinsic electrical conductivity is the primary technical limitation of pure LiFePO4 material. For this reason, carbon-coated LiFePO4 materials are widely applied in modern battery production. Meanwhile, LiFePO4 batteries enjoy distinct advantages including affordable cost, environmental non-toxicity, stable performance and excellent long-term cycling stability.
